Understanding Global Barcode Standards
EAN-13 or UPC barcodes:
Typically, an EAN-13 or UPC barcode measures 37mm in width and 25mm in height.
The minimal suggested size for these barcodes is about 80% of the standard size, equating to approximately 30mm wide by 20mm high, with a 3mm "quiet zone" (a clear space) on both sides of the barcode.
ITF-14 Carton Codes:
For ITF-14 Carton Codes, the standard dimension (at 100% size) is roughly 122mm in width by 32mm in bar height, featuring 10mm quiet zones on the sides.
For general distribution scanning, the ITF-14 barcode's magnification range spans from 50 to 100%. In other scanning environments, this range extends from 25 to 100%. When printing on corrugated fiberboard, it is advised that the barcode should be no smaller than 62.5%.
For general distribution environments, the bars' minimum height should be 32mm, while for other environments, the height should be as tall as possible, with a minimum of 13mm.
QR Codes:
QR Codes do not have stringent size regulations. The necessary size of a QR Code depends on the amount of encoded data and the scanning distance.
In close scanning scenarios, the practical minimum size for a QR Code is 2 cm by 2 cm (0.8 inches by 0.8 inches), excluding the quiet zone.
Optimal QR Code size is influenced by several factors such as the available packaging space, scanning conditions, printing quality, and resolution. Too small of a QR Code can make it difficult for scanners to read, and can pose printing quality challenges. Conversely, overly large QR Codes might hinder close-range scanning and present printing resolution issues.
Barcode Colors
Barcode scanners efficiently read black or cool colors (blue, green) while disregarding white or warm colors (red, orange, yellow). Hence, it is critical to print barcode bars in black or cool colors, with a background in white or warm colors. Reflective or metallic colors should be avoided as they do not scan well.
Barcode Position
EAN-13 and UPC barcodes are commonly aligned horizontally. When printed on curved surfaces (like bottles), it is recommended to rotate the barcode 90 degrees to a vertical position. Ensure that the barcode is not placed near edges; it should ideally be on a flat surface with ample blank space around the barcode bars (minimum of 3mm).
